A Clinician's Guide to Protecting Your Skin from Sun Damage

In Australia, we love the sun. It’s a huge part of our lifestyle. But living under the strong Aussie sun means we also need to be incredibly smart about protecting our skin. Over time, that exposure does more than just give you a tan. It accelerates the visible signs of ageing and contributes to serious long-term health risks.

So, how do you protect yourself without hiding indoors?

We’ll break down what skin damaged from the sun really looks like and share four evidence-based rules for your daily defence. We'll also explore how professional treatments can support skin that's already feeling the effects. This is your definitive guide to enjoying the sun, safely and confidently.

What does the sun do to the skin?

We all love a beautiful sunny day, but it’s necessary to understand what's happening on a cellular level when your skin is exposed.

Skin damaged from the sun isn't just a bad sunburn. It’s the gradual appearance of fine lines, uneven patches or "sun spots," and a rough, less vibrant texture. You'll typically notice it most on areas that see the sun often – your face, neck, chest, and hands.

What are the types of UV rays

There are two main players here: UVA and UVB. An easy way to remember them is:

  • UVA for Ageing: These rays penetrate deep into the skin (even through glass windows at home or in the car), breaking down the collagen that keeps it firm and plump.

  • UVB for Burning: These primarily affect the surface layers, causing redness and sunburn.

Both types can damage your skin's cellular DNA, which is a key reason why protecting skin from sun damage is a must.

How to protect yourself from the sun?

Let’s look at practical and evidence-based ways to reduce your risk of sun damage while maintaining healthy skin.

Rule #1: Master Your Sunscreen Game

Sunscreen is your frontline defence, but only if you use it correctly. When choosing a sunscreen, make sure it ticks these three boxes:

  • Broad-Spectrum & SPF 30+: This is the minimum standard. It protects you from both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

  • Water-Resistant: A must-have if you're swimming, exercising, or just enjoying a hot day.

  • TGA-Approved: This is your guarantee that it meets Australia's safety and effectiveness standards.

Put it on 20 minutes before you go outside. And don't be shy – most people only apply about half the amount they actually need - a sufficient amount is about two finger lengths. Pay special attention to your ears, the back of your neck, your lips, the tops of your feet and the backs of your hands.

When you're outdoors, reapply sunscreen EVERY.TWO.HOURS. This is not a suggestion. Reapply immediately after swimming or sweating, even if the bottle says it's water-resistant.

Rule #2: Think of clothing as your wearable shade

The Cancer Council made this incredibly simple for us here in Australia with a mantra you probably already know: the classic 5 S’s of sun safety

Here’s a quick refresher:

  • Slip on sun-protective clothing. Long sleeves and pants made from dark, tightly woven fabrics. For maximum confidence, look for clothing with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating.

  • Slop on your sunscreen. We covered this in Rule #1, but it’s so important that it’s always worth repeating. Be generous and reapply often!

  • Slap on a wide-brimmed hat. A cap is good, but a wide-brimmed hat is better because it protects your face, ears, and the back of your neck.

  • Seek out shade whenever you can, especially during the middle of the day when UV levels are at their peak.

  • Slide on sunglasses. A close-fitting, wraparound style that meets the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 1067) is best to protect not just your eyes, but the delicate skin around them.

Rule #3: Be smart about timing and shade

The sun's rays are at their most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. By planning your outdoor activities outside of these peak hours, you’re already winning. And while you're out, make shade your best friend.

Just remember that UV rays can bounce off surfaces like sand and water, so even under a big umbrella, don't forget to wear your sunscreen and hat.

Rule #4: Hydrate and pair it with a nutritious diet

While it's not a substitute for sunscreen, supporting your skin with good hydration and nutrition is a crucial part of the picture. A well-hydrated body leads to more supple, resilient skin.

Pair that with a diet full of antioxidant-rich foods, like colourful berries, leafy greens, and nuts, to help support your skin’s natural ability to repair itself. Healthy habits create healthier skin.

Professional support for sun-damaged skin

While prevention is always the best medicine, we have a range of professional treatments designed to manage the visible signs of skin damage from the sun

At Aesthetics by SuGar, the first and most important step is always a thorough consultation. This is where we create a plan that’s tailored specifically for you. Here are some of the options we might discuss:

1. Chemical Peels

For concerns like uneven pigmentation and rough texture, a professional peel can help. By applying a controlled solution, we encourage the renewal of the skin surface, aiming for a clearer, smoother appearance.

2. Targeted Light & Laser Therapies

These treatments use specific wavelengths of light to gently address concerns like visible sun spots and redness. The goal is to help support new collagen and help even out your overall skin tone.

3. Microneedling

This treatment is designed to kickstart your skin’s own powerful repair and regeneration processes. It may be an option for addressing skin texture and firmness issues affected by long-term sun exposure.

4. Hydrating & Barrier Support Facials

Sometimes, sun-affected skin is simply dehydrated and compromised. These treatments focus on deeply hydrating your skin and reinforcing its protective barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the most effective ways to protect your skin from the sun?

It’s not about one single thing, but a smart, multi-layered strategy. Your best defence is combining daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+, sun-smart clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, and seeking shade during peak hours. Consistency is everything!

How often should sunscreen be reapplied?

The golden rule is every two hours when you're outdoors. Set a timer if you have to! You also need to reapply immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. This is like topping up your shield before it gets too low.

What are the top professional services for repairing sun-damaged skin?

There’s no single "best" treatment. The right approach is always personalised. Depending on your concerns, we might discuss options like chemical peels for texture, targeted light therapies for sun spots, or microneedling to support firmness. It all starts with a consultation to see what your skin needs.

Are mineral sunscreens better for sensitive skin?

Many people with sensitive skin prefer mineral sunscreens. It’s like a physical shield: they use ingredients like zinc oxide to sit on top of your skin and block UV rays. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays instead. While both are effective, mineral options are often gentler.

Can sun damage actually be reversed?

While we can't "reverse" all the underlying cellular changes, we can absolutely improve the visible signs, like pigmentation and fine lines, with professional support. This highlights why prevention is your most powerful tool.

Play the long game for healthy skin

Protecting your skin from the sun isn't about a single action, but a daily commitment to its long-term health. But with all these options, where’s the best place to begin? It’s simple: with a consultation AND a conversation.
